Amwaj Islands is a group of six manmade islands near the coast of Muharraq, Bahrain. This first of its kind development includes commercial and residential property set in idyllic beachfront communities, and is an architectural and engineering wonder. The islands are part of the Kingdom of Bahrain, a small archipelago country in the Arabia Gulf that connects to mainland Saudi Arabia by the King Fahd Causeway.

In getting to Amwaj Islands, travelers fly to Bahrain International Airport on Gulf Air, and then ride by taxi or bus across the new 3-kilometer highway for the last portion of the route. Arabic is the official language, but English and Persian are also frequently spoken. White buildings with clean geometric lines reflect a modern grandeur--architecture with elegant interiors emphasizing ocean views. Pools and hotels built along the water add to the allure. Development is new and some buildings are still under construction, but plenty of businesses are open for the tourist to enjoy shopping, dining and entertainment. The island of Najmah has the highest concentration of hotels and tourist attractions. Other islands offer permanent residential housing, and one island, Dalphene, is dedicated to recreation, with a bird sanctuary, water park, and beach club.

Bahrain is a warm climate with large areas of desert. Summers are hot--temperatures average 36 degrees Centigrade (97 degrees Fahrenheit) and the tourist season (November to February) is when the weather is most pleasant. The mild weather gives opportunities for activities such as sailing, water skiing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Other recreation includes touring the commercial districts and colorful markets. For those interested in history, Bahrain National Museum, in the capital of Manama, houses the country’s archeological treasures.

A range of options, from villas to suites will appeal to travelers from around the world. The Bahrain Guest House in Manama has a quiet, relaxing atmosphere and modern conveniences. Nestled along a lagoon, the hotel offers a private beach with access to snorkeling and kayaking. For unusual and exclusive accommodations, visitors can stay at The Dragon, a luxury waterfront hotel built in the shape of the mythical creature. Located in Najmah, the resort has chalets and suites with amenities such as an infinity pool, sundecks, Jacuzzis, two restaurants, lounges, and a spa and salon. Spectacular views and ocean recreation access make this hotel a popular choice. More luxury hotels will be opening in 2011, including the 5-star Marriott Renaissance. Secluded accommodations promise world-class luxury in a unique, sophisticated environment.

Sheltered expanses of calm, turquoise water and fine sand beaches entice the visitor to relax and enjoy the tranquility of Amwaj Islands.
